I highly recommend Jonathan Bradshaw's tour of Rochester, which was the highlight of my visit to the recent Dickensian Festival.
Jonathan our friendly, well-spoken, guide led... read more an excellent tour, which with his historic references really brought the city's past to life!
His passion for Rochester and Dickens clearly shone through. He took us to places I never knew existed, despite having lived in the vicinity for 3 years!!
His tour was a mine of interesting facts, amusing ancedotes and information.
It was very well researched, beautifully composed and at times poetic, with lots of links to Charles's work.
Our guide was even dressed very elegantly, in keeping with the Dickensian theme.
Jonathan imparted secrets of the city of Rochester in a warm and very engaging, personable manner.
A visit to Rochester really is not complete without a tour by the City of Rochester Society Guided Walks.
Simply unmissable! I hope to be back next year with more people!!

A superb hour in the company of brilliant guides. We were there with a Pickwick group, so the focus was very much on Dickens and the wonderful characters that... read more inhabit the book - and who appeared in and around Rochester/Chatham. Facts, interspersed with readings took us from the castle, down the high street and ending at the famed Dickens Chalet. A really wonderful tour and the guides were top notch! Highly recommended.

This is a free guided tour. For a start most unusual for something so professional. Donations welcome at the end but no pressure.
The Tour - 90 minutes from... read more Rochester Visitor Centre and just done so well. Interesting and informative. Our guide was very relaxed which made for a nice comfortable experience even in times of Covid-19. Rochester is a delight. This is an "easy" tour in that Rochester is small but makes up for it in History and wonderful buildings/architecture.
This tour did not take you inside the Cathedral as insufficient time, but does make stops and references outside which gives you a taste for wanting to see more!
Would thoroughly recommend, an absolute perfect way to spend an afternoon followed by refreshment's. Plenty of choice along the High Street.
Thank-you for sharing your knowledge and enthusiasm (3 ladies/friends attended 03.10.20)

Well worth joining whether you are visiting or a resident. Our guide, John, was enthusiastic and knowledgeable bringing the history of the city to life. The Society does a great... read more job and the volunteers are terrific ambassadors. There’s so much to see and this is a fun way to get around and to learn about the characters that have shaped Rochester. You’ll get to see some hidden gems too. The walks are Covid safe and free with just a donation requested which I thought was terrific.

We arrived in Rochester, as tourists from Yorkshire, to have a look around. We met James down the High Street advertising his tours. he was brilliant. He knew what he... read more was talking about, which made our trip so much more interesting.James took us all round the centre of Rochester, taking into account that we had a baby in a pushchair with us. He got us back in time for our car park, and the Ladies football! Thanks, James

Today, I experienced a most wonderful conducted Guided Tour of Rochester, as related to Charles Dickens’ “The Mystery of Edwin Drood”. With two magnificent and fully experienced Tour Guides,... read more I was treated to an in-depth, analytical, and most engaging journey around Rochester, together with beautifully-spoken and scripted enactments at various points of the Tour. Without doubt, this was the best Saturday morning I have enjoyed for many a year. I urge all people to seriously consider enjoying this wonderful treat in Rochester's captivating environs. …

Many thanks to John for a superb guided walk around the beautiful city of Rochester. The walk covered the main sites but many more that I would not have found... read more if not for John. This really bought the city alive for both of us.
John delivered his walk with enthusiasm and an impressive depth of knowledge. He was only too happy to answer questions and unusually for some guides he never lost the groups interest.
I have done many guided walks over the last forty years and few have been of this high standard. So thanks again John.
My advice to future visitors is to book a City of Rochester guided walk and if you are lucky then you will get John as your guide.
Thanks again from Mike and Keith from Wolverhampton
