It was Charles Dickens’ dying wish that he would not be “the subject of any monument”. However many people are unaware of this and are surprised to find that when they visit Rochester, there isn’t a monument to him. City of Rochester Society tour guide Geoff Ettridge once quipped when someone made this observation, that perhaps Rochester is his monument.

In Rochester – a Monument to Dickens?, published to commemorate the 150th anniversary of Dickens’ death, Geoff uses Dickens’ novels and stories, as well as newspapers from the time, to discover something of the local people, places and events that may have inspired or informed his writing.

Geoff is grateful to the H R Pratt Boorman Family Foundation for the grant that covered the cost of printing the book. This means that at least £12 from every purchase will go towards helping to conserve Dickens’ Swiss Chalet at Eastgate House in Rochester.
